City Winter Services
The Paint a Plow initiative combines public art, education, and winter service awareness to create a fun, visible way to connect the community with the City's winter services. With each winter weather event, City crews are responsible for clearing approximately:
6,522 kilometres of roadway
885 kilometres of sidewalks
414 kilometres of on-street bike lanes

The City is able to accomplish this with 115 City plows, over 300 contracted pieces of plowing equipment and 34 sidewalk plows.

Who can participate? Participation is open to all City of Hamilton residents, schools, and community groups. Due to space limitations the activity of physically painting the plow will be limited to 5 people per group.
Are there themes or guidelines for the designs? Yes. Designs should be family-friendly, creative, and safe for public display. All submissions must comply with municipal content standards.
What materials are used for painting? Non-toxic, weather-resistant paints and clear coatings are provided to ensure durability and safety. Participants do not need to supply their own materials.
Is there a cost to participate? No. Participation in Paint a Plow is free. All materials and support are provided by the City.
Who decides which designs are painted? Submitted designs are reviewed and selected by City staff to ensure they meet safety, content, and feasibility requirements. Selected designs are then scheduled for painting on the plow. In future years, community voting may also be an option.
What safety measures are in place during painting? All painting activities are supervised by City staff. Participants are provided with protective gear and instructions to ensure a safe, fun experience.
Does painting a plow delay winter service? No. The Paint a Plow program does not impact winter operations or service delivery. All plows continue to operate according to Council-approved winter levels of service. Painting does not affect the plow’s safety or performance.
How long do the painted designs last? Painted designs are clear coated to extend their durability. They typically last for the winter season, but some designs may remain vibrant for multiple seasons. Normal wear from winter operations is expected and reflects the working nature of the plows.
How can residents see the painted plows? Painted plows will be in active service throughout the winter season and may be seen operating across the City. Residents can also follow the locations of painted plows in real time using the City’s online plow tracker which shows where plows are currently working.
