What is a Parking Master Plan?

A Parking Master Plan is a chance to review current policies and procedures, pricing models, mobility strategies and technologies that can work to identify a future-thinking sustainable framework for parking planning, operations, enforcement and economic development.

Why does the City of Hamilton need a Parking Master Plan?

As economic development and growth has significantly increased since the last downtown parking study performed in 2013, it is important that the Hamilton Municipal Parking System assesses the overall health of the parking system and ensure we updated and develop policies and strategies that support the long term sustainability of the Hamilton Municipal Parking System.

Who is the City of Hamilton consulting with to develop the Parking Master Plan?

The City of Hamilton is consulting with various stakeholders to receive input on current and future policy planning and overall strategies. In late 2019, IBI Group developed an online survey, a mapping tool and had a preliminary Public Information session to engage the public, the business community, internal city departments and other local institutions.

What are some current parking challenges that Hamilton is experiencing that the plan will focus on?

    • balancing downtown parking needs with redevelopment of surface parking lots
    • balancing parking supply needs with encouragement of more sustainable transportation modes
    • meeting paid parking demand
    • planning for new mobility technologies
    • maintaining a self-sustainable financial model for HMPS
