The City is creating a Municipal Addressing and Street Naming By-law. Currently, the City does not have a By-law to govern these matters.
The City currently has a Municipal Addressing Policy and Street Naming Guidelines. While these documents provide important direction on how municipal address numbers are assigned and how street names are determined, they are lacking certain key components.
Therefore, the Municipal Addressing and Street Naming By-law will include new requirements related to:
direction on how municipal address numbers must be displayed
information on addressing of Additional Dwelling Units
direction regarding the naming of private streets
new enforcement measures which will allow the City to take action in situations where municipal addresses are not being appropriately displayed
The new requirements in the By-law related to enforcement are an important public safety improvement which will allow the City to ensure that municipal addresses are being properly displayed for the purpose of way-finding, particularly for emergency services.
The By-law will give the City the authority to lay fines and/or charges where an incorrect address is displayed or where the official municipal address is not displayed in accordance with the criteria of the By-law.
We're collecting information as part of this project The City of Hamilton collects information under authority of Section 227 of the Municipal Act, 2001. Any personal information collected for Municipal Addressing & Street Naming By-law will be used to refine the draft by-law. More details and contact information can be found in the right column of this page under "Notice of Collection".
