The project scope will include:

  • Share Is there a particular reason the locations of the water play and playground would flip from the current configuration, where the proposal is to move the water play area moving closer to the existing community house while the playground is relocated to the current water play area? Also, a previously submitted question re: parking has some validity in that when the City looks at many other community parks with, in particular, recreational sport spaces (such as baseball) they City has implemented "no parking" on the side of the city streets abutting the park restricting the parking to the opposing side only. This maintains two lanes for traffic and clear vision of anyone leaving the park. City Engineering evaluation of the situation, when baseball is under way (evenings, tournament weekends) will find that there is barely a single lane for traffic where people leaving the park between the parked cars often are stepping out into traffic. Additionally emergency vehicles would have a challenge in navigating passage during such situations. While it is understood that the baseball diamonds are on the School Board lands but operated by the City when considering the redevelopment of the park there ought to be consideration of supplemental parking as baseball is an integral part of the Gourley Park Community Association's efforts. on Facebook Share Is there a particular reason the locations of the water play and playground would flip from the current configuration, where the proposal is to move the water play area moving closer to the existing community house while the playground is relocated to the current water play area? The playground and spray pad were flipped to locate the spray pad in a more open area, while taking advantage of the natural shade of the adjacent woodlot for the playground. Parking concerns have been forwarded to Parks, Recreation, and Bylaw to determine if any additional measures can be taken to alleviate parking issues in the surrounding neighbourhood during the baseball season.

The City’s standard accessible playground surface is engineered wood fibre mulch (EWF). Rubber surfacing, accessibility mats, and a combination of EWF and rubber are options that further improve playground accessibility. These options are considered on a park by park basis depending on specific community requirements, operational feasibility, and available budget.

The existing woodlot will be protected during construction and will not be within the limits of construction. Tree removals will be kept to a minimum within the playground area, and additional trees will be planted around the new amenities. Park and walkway lighting will be chosen to ensure the appropriate levels of light to ensure safety and security, while respecting the natural environment and limiting light pollution.

No additional parking is planned within Gourley Park. On-street parking is available where allowed.

Accessibility throughout is a main priority, how do you plan to achieve this?

AFrisina asked over 1 year ago

Accessibility throughout will be achieved by implementing walkways with accessible slopes and accessible components in the playground. Accessible playground components in the playground could include activity panels, sensory stations, accessible swings, and transfer stations for those with accessibility limitations. The spray pad components are considered accessible, and the activator button is installed at an accessible height, with an audible beep when activated. Additional benches and concrete pads are being provided, which also include spaces for wheelchairs.
