Consultation has concluded
The City of Hamilton has received a request for a leash free area (fully fenced dog park) at Centennial Heights Park, located at 12 Karendale Crescent, Freelton (PDF, 465 KB). The soccer fields on the west side of the park have remained unprogrammed for several years and have been identified as the preferred location.
To meet the expressed needs of area residents, and with the support of Ward 13 Councillor VanderBeek on behalf of constituents, the City has explored the feasibility of a Leash Free Dog Park (fully fenced) in the unused soccer fields. When assessed against the Leash Free Parks Program Policy (PW03067)(External link) and from a recreation needs standpoint as outlined in the Outdoor Recreation Study (2011), Centennial Heights Park meets most of the site selection criteria.
When designing a Leash Free facility, the City considers current best practices including minimum size and inclusion of a small/frail dog area, maintenance requirements, accessibility and safety. Water and lighting are not being considered in this proposal.
Background
Through the Leash Free Parks Program, the City currently maintains 12 Leash Free Parks (fenced Dog Parks and unfenced Free Running Areas) across the City, with the goal of implementing the model of at least one Free Running Area and/or Dog Park per ward, subject to the availability of appropriate sites and funding (Outdoor Recreation Facilities and Sports Field Provision Plan, 2011).
While the new Ward 13 (2018) has 2 leash free areas (Borers Dog Park and Chegwin Free Running Area), it is recognized that Flamborough has a deficit with the closest Leash Free area in this case, approximately 15km from Centennial Heights Park at Joe Sams Leisure Park, Waterdown in Ward 15.
