The Hamilton Amateur Athletic Association Grounds (known as HAAA) is a 7-acre community park located within the Kirkendall Neighborhood. It’s home to the Hamilton Tennis Club along its north end and Ryerson Recreation Centre and Ryerson Middle School are located on its east side, with private residents backing on to the park’s westerly limits and Charleton Avenue along the south boundary.

The current features of the park are reaching the end of their service life, and to ensure the community can continue to enjoy the HAAA Grounds, these aging park features need to be replaced.

The Renewal Plan for the HAAA Grounds is planned to be built in 2024. This plan is the result of input gathered from extensive public consultation in 2020-2021. Review the Survey Response Report (PDF)(External link)

We want to hear from you!

There is now an opportunity to select options for various features in the park. The City of Hamilton wants to hear what you think – take the survey to tell us which skate dot design, fitness equipment layout and bouldering option you like. Survey opens November 27, 2023.

The Renewal Plan provides numerous opportunities, in various formats for all members of the community to provide their valuable feedback on the parks Renewal Plan.   This information will be consolidated and reviewed by the project team, who will explore the feasibility of any recommendation based on the  City’s Community Park programming.   Please keep in mind that the parks overall size, the cultural heritage aspect of the site, legislative  requirements such as the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), CSA Group (CSA – formerly Canadian Standards Association), Ontario Building Code (OBC) etc. will need to be considered during the Renewal Plan process.

If there are particular concerns you would like to address, we ask that you please reach out to myself (Wes Kindree) directly so we can discuss further.

Yes, the city currently has some play structures by the above noted manufacturer in other parks.   We will look at all our options through the Renewal Plan and refine that even further when we look at developing the detailed design of the playground area.

The Renewal Plan will provide an opportunity to identify park features using a climate lens to explore these opportunities i.e. stormwater management, renewable energy source, green infrastructure etc.  Consideration of overall maintenance impacts and material options will be considered through the Renewal Plan.

Yes, there are opportunities for community members and/or groups to make monetary contributions to a project if they wish. We ask that those community members reach out to us directly to discuss the best approach.

Staff do not anticipate that parking within the HAAA Grounds will be introduced through the Renewal Plan.

The Master Plan project that was started in 2018 was canceled shortly after it’s initial PIC in June 2018 (2.5 years ago) by the previous ward 1 office.   City staff have the minutes and feedback from that initial PIC on file.  The 2021 HAAA Renewal Plan is a new project, and as such, we would like to collect current data/community feedback to help ensure the Renewal Plan reflects the HAAA community of today and the future.

What (or who) is the Clubhouse used for/by?

GlennB asked almost 4 years ago

As of 2020, the clubhouse is being used for storage of City items, along with public washroom facilities.  The building also includes the mechanical room for the existing spray pad and field lighting.  It should be noted that the clubhouse is no longer being used by the football club that the HAAA Grounds was home to.
