Love at First Ride
April 23, 1972. I was a lonely 19 year old girl, and after a long day of studying for exams at McMaster, decided to go and play euchre. I noticed the very friendly, talkative bus driver on the way up, but it wasn't until I caught him again on the way home that I really sat up and took notice, there was just something about him.... By the time we got back downtown, I summoned up all my courage and asked: "Would you like some company for a little while?" We were married 4 months later. We just celebrated our 52nd wedding anniversary on Sept. 2nd. Cliff drove the bus for 28 years, starting in Sept. 1971 and retiring on June 1 1999. In 1984 we were involved in a serious car accident while on our first trip to PEI, which left me handicapped, and in 2020 just as Covid was changing the world he had a stroke during a heart operation. So now we both use scooters, but we are still together, still looking after one another, and still holding hands. When Cliff was still working, I used to always catch his bus on our "busiversary". What more meaningful way to celebrate and remember?
