Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) celebrates its 150th Anniversary in May 2024!

As part of the 150th anniversary celebrations, HSR wants to hear from you! Share your stories, memories, and high-resolution photos with us. We’d love to share them on the website and include them in our promotional materials.

We’ll be collecting submissions throughout the year, but if you share your HSR story or photo by May 31, 2024, we may include it in the visual history book that is being made to commemorate HSR 150.

  • When the buses were yellow and grey, or even burgundy, and the Nature Bus was rolling through the streets?

 The City of Hamilton is encouraging residents to share their stories, memories and experiences of the Hamilton Street Railway. Share your best HSR memories here.

  • Begin your submission by adding a Title; when you enter text in the Start your story by providing a title field, the full text editor for the body of the story will appear.
  • When you're ready, select Create to submit your story!

Notice of Collection:

HSR is seeking stories and high-resolution photos as part of its 150th Anniversary celebrations.  Photos and stories can be sent to HSR through the Engage platform.
By submitting, you consent to your HSR photo(s) and stories being used. Although there is no prize or compensation, HSR will provide a photo credit if submissions include a first and last name. Include a description and brief story behind the photo. The City of Hamilton collects information under the authority of Section 227 of the Municipal Act, 2001.  Any personal information collected for HSR 150 and HSR Marketing will be used to celebrate HSR’s 150th anniversary celebrations and for HSR promotional purposes.
By submitting through the Engage platform, you are consenting to receiving emails from the City of Hamilton and/or their agents/contractors for HSR 150 and HSR Marketing. Information collected for this initiative may be stored on servers located in Canada and may be subject to Canadian laws.     Part of what drove me to come to Hamilton was the growth I'd seen in its transit. The HSR is an interesting case -- it's intermingled with the other transit agencies in the GTA, including GO, and it's also got it's own LRT on the way (eventually). With the growth Hamilton is experiencing and the evolution it will see over the next decade, I saw it as a refreshing change from my relatively slow-to-move hometown of London.     I’m a professional passenger.

    What does it mean? For me – a lot!

    Each ride is my piece of meditation at any part of the day and under any weather conditions😉.

    Every time when I look through the window, or talk to my husband, who is thousands kilometres away now, the bus gives me a chance to forget about what is here and now but join the Universe, think about something important.     When I went to McMaster University, I simply could not afford the price of a parking pass, even the student lot on the other side of Cootes Drive. So I purchased a semester pass and took the bus every weekday (Parkdale and B-Line). The buses may have been packed, but I knew I was in the safe hands of a competent driver and I would get to school and my classes on time.     Back when I was in high school, I would occasionally make the long journey from Pickering to Hamilton to photograph and ride the remaining General Motors articulated buses. These were unique buses built as part of an articulated bus demonstration program. There was only a small number of them built, and by this time, they were only running in Hamilton. On some trips, I met others who had the same interest in public transportation. All these years later we are still good friends.     When my family moved to the Hamilton Mountain. We lived near Upper Sherman and Mohawk Road. The 24 Upper Sherman only went as far as Upper Sherman and Berko. I knew when the bus would be coming as it would turn left onto Jeanette Street and right onto Bellingham Drive. We lived on Austin Drive which would be southwest of Bellingham. Our backyard faced west and we would hear the bus coming. Back then we didn't have Bus Check so that was how we knew the bus was coming. It was amazing to live in an area where transit was...
